ACHIEVE CONFIDENCE IN YOUR SINGING
Experienced singers put in endless amounts of training to hone their skills in order to perform assuredly to their audience. It’s no myth, however, that even the most well-prepared and well-trained singer can suffer from confidence issues; that ‘inner critic’ we so often hear about these days.
Good preparation is vital to your performance; however, what happens when you’re faced with performance situations you can’t prepare for? An audition, perhaps–where you may be requested in the moment to perform an additional piece you haven’t prepared. Or a situation where–through no fault of your own–you’re under-rehearsed: maybe you’ve been requested last-minute to step in to cover a role.
Such situations are likely to cause stress in your performance, so while your singing voice is theoretically in perfect working order, the ‘inner critic’ will try to sow the seed of doubt: the resulting stress can adversely affect the voice, meaning your performance won’t be what it could or should be.
This Masterclass will help you get the most out of not just your voice, but out of your performance, offering you essential hints and guidance to best prepare and to overcome self-doubt and unhelpful nerves.
ABOUT STELLA BASS
Dublin native Stella studied voice and piano accordion from a young age, later completing a BSc degree in UCD. Stella then took up the piano, and in 2017 completed her Master's Degree in Music in Dublin's Conservatory of Music and Drama.
Studying is one thing, but music is often best honed through performance. Many years of singing in musicals, bands and cabarets helped her finely-tune her craft, generating a versatile repertoire crossing over jazz, classical and musical theatre.
In 2014, she released her first album, “Too Darn Hot"–featuring songs from Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and newly-arranged songs by Amy Winehouse and Robert Palmer–to critical acclaim; indeed, upon hearing Stella's album cover of her daughter's song Back to Black, Amy Winehouse’s mother got in touch with Stella directly to say how much she loved the version, and indeed that Stella's album was being played non-stop in her house! The album gets regular radio airplay in Ireland–it was Album of the Week on RTE Lyric FM, on its release–and has made waves on jazz stations in the UK, the USA, Germany and Switzerland. Indeed, the album was selected by Aer Lingusfor inclusion on its longhaul in-flight entertainment schedule since April 2016.
In January 2015, she created and performed her jazz-inspired take on the music of Stephen Sondheim; this show was selected by the Arts Council to tour Ireland, and has been performed on three occasions in the National Concert Hall, the most recent concert in late 2018 being a sellout.
Stella sings with the Hot House Big Band, has recorded with the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, and was the resident singer for almost a decade in Dublin's iconic Café en Seine. She has also made numerous TV/radio appearances on Ireland’s national stations and in late 2017 was invited to perform in Hong Kong for the Ireland Funds Gala Ball. As an actor, she has been in several short films and late in 2018 was cast in a small role in the feature film “Sweetness in the Belly”, performing opposite Dakota Fanning.
In 2013, Stella added to her producing credits, returning to her early musical theatre roots to co-produce and perform in the Irish première of the hit off-Broadway show,“Shout! The Mod Musical”, which sold out its 7-week run in Dublin’s Tivoli Theatre. She also completed an Irish tour of her own one-woman show,"Smoke & Sound,a tribute to the cabaret era of inter-war Berlin, featuring the music of Kurt Weill, Berthold Brecht and Marlene Dietrich; she returned to the NCH in August 2016 and July 2018 with this for further sellout concerts, and was invited in November 2018 to perform the programme for the German Ambassador to Ireland. She has toured in Germany, and performed in London’s celebrated Pizza Express Jazz Club in April 2017. Throughout 2017, Stella toured her show celebrating the centenary of the birth of Ella Fitzgerald; the show sold out the National Concert Hall, the Cork Jazz Festival 2017 and two nights in the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast
Stella’s workshop is on SUNDAY 3rd February 3-5.30pm and is for Teenagers and Young Adults. €35
