Senior Musical Theatre Company

The Senior Musical Theatre Company performs in a musical they have produced, in the O'Casey Theatre in Dublin’s city centre and in The Drum Theatre, Drumcondra each May. Senior Musical Theatre is a class that takes the form of rehearsals for the upcoming show. Students commit for the full year and meet weekly to rehearse with a professional director, choreographer, and musical director. Extra commitment is required closer to the show dates.

This year's musical will be Once on this Island Jr. directed and choreographed by Nina Pongratz.

With its poignant story and catchy Caribbean-flavored score, Once on This Island JR. is a highly original theatrical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. Through almost non-stop song and dance, this full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the 4 fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and even death.

There are 17 parts in the show many with solo songs, exciting acting opportunities, as well as foundations of African dancing so there are opportunities for everyone!

Membership of weekly Dance and Creative Drama classes in ITW is essential for students who wish to take Musical Theatre, and a high level of commitment is required. As we get closer to the annual show, a greater degree of attendance at ITW is required as we also make props, paint sets, fundraise, and create costumes.

Senior Musical Theatre takes musical training to the next level with challenging harmonies, dance routines, and character development. We encourage each actor to become a triple threat in dance, voice, and acting, and we work with students to improve both their strengths and weaknesses.

Students in the Senior Musical Theatre Company are expected to research their shows, characters, and composers, and to treat the rehearsal process professionally. Many students go on to work professionally or semi-professionally in the Performing Arts, both while they’re still in school and after graduation.

Recent productions from our Senior Musical Theatre Company included Hairspray; Urinetown; and Into The Woods Jr.
