Juniors 1st-3rd Class:

Designed specifically for a group setting, Junior singing classes expand on theory and repertoire.

Emphasis is placed on correct breathing (intercostal diaphragmatic) and placement of the jaw, tongue, and mouth. Juniors work together on musical theatre and standard music, focussing on musical phrasing as well as interpretation and character development. This class sets the foundation for vocal training in later years when their voices start to mature.

At this level, students take group exams with the Irish Board, which involve not only age-appropriate songs but also research and character development. They must show they understand the context of the song as well as display basic singing technique to the examiner.

Singing at ITW places equal emphasis on technique and performance. Singing class is offered in small groups for younger students and beginners. Older students who are on higher grades, getting ready for Junior or Leaving Cert practicals, or preparing for college auditions are encouraged to take private lessons. Singing classes are generally taken in addition to the weekly dance and creative drama core subjects, but are offered as a non-member option in selective circumstances.

Our singing classes are a mix of classical singing technique, music theory, and performance. The repertoire primarily comes from musical theatre, but traditional, classical, and pop is also included when appropriate. Students are divided by school class, and when they’re old enough they work towards exams with the Leinster School of Music and Drama and the Irish Board of Speech and Drama. These exams include a written research component as well as theory, vocal technique, and performance.

There are two recitals per year for singing students from the Junior to Young Adult levels when parents get a chance to hear what the students are preparing for their exams.

Young Adults 4th-6th Year

At The Independent Theatre Workshop, we are committed to the holistic development of our students, nurturing their talent, and preparing them for the future. We understand the significance of tailored instruction, personalized guidance, and performance opportunities in shaping the musical journey of young adults. Join us and embrace the world of singing as you prepare for exams, auditions, and the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.

At The Independent Theatre Workshop, we offer dynamic and intimate group singing classes for young adults, keeping the class sizes small to ensure focused and personalized instruction. For serious singers aged 16 and above, we highly encourage private lessons as they provide individualized attention and tailored guidance.

At this stage, the voice is approaching maturity, and it is an opportune time for serious vocal training. Our experienced teachers take great care in developing the upper and lower registers of the voice while educating singers on how to maintain vocal health. We place equal emphasis on classical repertoire, musical theatre, and pop, providing students with a well-rounded musical education that nurtures their versatility.

Private lessons are individually tailored to meet the specific needs of each student. They serve as an ideal platform for Leaving Certificate preparation as well as higher grades in the Leinster School. Our students consistently achieve high grades in their exams and have demonstrated remarkable success in Feisanna, often bringing home top awards. We take pride in their accomplishments and provide a supportive environment that encourages their growth and excellence.

Notable success stories among our students include Matthew Nolan, who was the recipient of the Leinster School of Music and Drama National Excellence Award for Music in 2022. In previous years, Clarice Makarevitch (2021) and Sarah Kelly (2018) also received this prestigious recognition. Sarah, having trained in Musical Theatre at The Royal Scottish Conservatoire, is now working as a professional performer in London while Matthew is heading into his third year at top Performing Arts Training College Arts Ed in London.

At this level we have a wonderful Senior Musical Theatre Company who perform fully staged musical productions every year. A high level of commitment is required but the rewards are huge.

Our students have also had the privilege of performing regularly with Irish National Opera, Festival Productions, and Lyric Opera.

We warmly welcome beginners at this age and encourage them to join our group or private classes, depending on their goals and aspirations. Our instructors create a supportive and inclusive environment where beginners can embark on their singing journey with confidence and enthusiasm.

In addition to Leaving Certificate and exam preparation, we extend our support to fifth and sixth-year students who are interested in pursuing music and/or musical theatre at the university level. We provide specialised singing instruction to prepare them for auditions, equipping them with the necessary skills and confidence to showcase their talent and pursue their dreams in higher education. Our students have been very successful in securing places in top Musical Theatre Colleges at home and overseas including Arts Ed, Mountview, GSA, Central, Trinity Laban and Italia Conti and gone on to work professionally in the West End (inc, Phantom of the Opera, 42nd Street, Matilda, Waitress) and national and regional theatres.

At The Independent Theatre Workshop, we are committed to the holistic development of our students, nurturing their talent, and preparing them for the future. We understand the significance of tailored instruction, personalized guidance, and performance opportunities in shaping the musical journey of young adults. CLASS STRUCTURE: We take 3 students into a 1 hour Young Adult Singing lesson. 30 minute private lessons are encouraged for students doing Grades 4 and above, especially for Leaving Cert students who wish to sing as part of their practical.

Singing Singing

Senior singing 1st -3rd year

Both male and female voices are in a state of changing and settling during this phase. Vocal training can start to get more serious after the voice has changed. Every student’s instrument is different, especially at the Senior level.

During the phase when both male and female voices are going through changes and settling, vocal training becomes a more serious endeavor. It is important to wait until the voice has undergone its transformation before delving deeper into vocal instruction. Each student's vocal instrument is unique, particularly at the Senior level, and requires careful consideration.

At The Independent Theatre Workshop, we understand the importance of tailoring the musical repertoire to suit the individual's voice during this transitional phase. For higher level exams, appropriate music is selected and can be worked on. However, many students begin their vocal training at this age and choose to focus on building a strong foundation in the basics of singing. Regardless of the chosen path, this is an opportune time to commit to singing and embrace a more serious approach.

First-year students at our workshop are eligible to participate in Grades 4 and above in the Leinster School Musical Theatre exams, which consists of eight grades. As students progress, the focus becomes more specific, and they are encouraged to diversify their musical repertoire by studying both classical music and musical theatre. This approach ensures that as the voice matures, it remains versatile and protected from potential damage.

Many of our Senior students are actively involved in musical productions or are preparing for their Junior Cert so they are working towards specific repertoire and rehearsal goals. We understand the significance of tailoring instruction to meet these individual needs and provide the necessary guidance to excel in these endeavors.

Private lessons are highly encouraged for students who are pursuing Grades 4 and above, especially for Junior Cert students who wish to include singing as part of their practical examinations. Private lessons offer a focused and personalized approach to instruction, allowing students to receive individualized attention, address specific challenges, and refine their vocal techniques. Our singing students have consistently achieved excellent results in their practicals.

At The Independent Theatre Workshop, we prioritize the well-rounded development of our students. We recognize that a comprehensive musical education goes beyond musical theatre alone. By encouraging students to explore classical music alongside their musical theatre repertoire, we help them cultivate versatility and a broader musical understanding. This not only nurtures their vocal abilities but also safeguards their vocal health and longevity.

Our dedicated instructors are experienced in working with students at this crucial stage of vocal development. They provide the necessary guidance, support, and expertise to help students navigate the changes in their voices and progress towards their musical goals. By creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, we empower students to develop their unique voices, express themselves artistically, and embrace the joy of singing.

At this age our students can join our ITW Junior Musical Theatre Company and perform in a fully staged musical each year and travel to Birmingham for the MTI Jr Musical Theatre Festival. Many also work with The Irish National Opera in professional large scale productions in the Bord Gais and Gaiety Theatres and on tour and with Festival Productions at Christmas.

If you are a student in this transitional phase, whether aiming for higher level exams, musical performances, or preparing for the Junior Cert, The Independent Theatre Workshop is here to support and guide you on your musical journey. We invite you to take this exciting step and embark on a path of serious singing and personal growth. Both male and female voices are in a state of changing and settling during this phase. Vocal training can start to get more serious after the voice has changed. Every student’s instrument is different, especially at the Senior level. Music appropriate for the individual’s voice is chosen and may be worked on for higher level exams, however many students only start their training at this age and choose to focus on basics. Whatever the goal, this is a good time to get serious about singing.

We take 4 students into a 1 hour Senior Singing lesson. Private lessons are encouraged for students doing Grades 4 and above, especially for Junior Cert students who wish to sing as part of their practical. But places are limited.
